On February 26, 2016, in the framework of the “Justice for Khojaly” international campaign launched by the Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva, an event was held at the Embassy to commemorate the 24th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide.
The ceremony was attended by Estonian public figures, media representatives, Azerbaijani and foreign students from Tallinn and Tartu, representatives from the Estonian School of Diplomacy, the Azerbaijani community, the Embassy staff and their family members.
At the beginning of the event, the victims of the Khojaly genocide were commemorated with a minute of silence.
Later on, the participants were given information on the background of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, a „PowerPoint“ presentation was made to introduce the details of the tragic night that took place over the night 25-26 February, 1992 and the „Justice for Khojaly“, the international campaign to recognize the genocide against Azerbaijani people.
During the event, the UN Security Council's four resolutions adopted in 1993 and the principles of the OSCE Lisbon Summit, the country's sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of internationally recognized borders, which included in the joint declarations adopted by Azerbaijani and Estonian presidents in 2009 and 2010 respectively, once again reflected the principled position of Estonia.
In continuation, a documentary film"25 children devoid of parental care" filmed by "Ireli" Civil Union was screened.
Among the participants, compatriots from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, now living in Estonia, shared their bitter memories experienced as a result of the conflict and expressed confidence to the soonest resolving of the conflict and returning to their homeland thanks to the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's successful policy.
The event was followed by a photo exhibition dedicated to the genocide.
